Argania Liquid Gold Hair Oil is filled with natural ingredients which instantly create brilliant shine while smoothing and nourishing your hair. Where does it come from? The key ingredient in the Argania range is argan oil. Argan oil is oil produced from the kernels of the argan tree, unique to south-western Morocco and is valued for its nutritive, cosmetic and numerous medicinal properties. Argan trees grow wild in semi-desert soil, and have a deep root system which helps protect against soil erosion and the northern advance of the Sahara. Argan oil remains one of the rarest oils in the world due the small and very specific growing areas. How is argan oil produced? The production of argan oil and its by-products is the preserve of the Berber women, and the techniques of argan oil extraction are based on traditional knowledge that has been passed from mothers to daughters of Berber families down the centuries. The result is a miracle oil, which has finally found its way across the Mediterranean to Europe and the rest of the world. Between June and August, they harvest the ripe fruit that has fallen to the ground. This fruit is dried for several weeks in the sun, and then the women crack the nut between two rocks to extract the precious, oil-rich seeds. The seeds are ground to a paste using a rotary hand stone and a quern. Water is then added to the paste and it is squeezed by hands to extract the oil. This manual process extracts 70 % of the oil from the seeds. Three very good reasons about using Argania Oil Argan oil was sold in Moroccan markets even before the Phoenicians arrived, yet the hardy argan tree has been slowly disappearing. Overgrazing by goats and a growing, wood-hungry local population have whittled the number of surviving trees down to less than half of what it was 50 years ago. UNESCO, and enthusiasts excited by the oil’s reputed anti-aging qualities have helped by creating a global market for the exotic oil, the unlikely alliance hopes to raise awareness about the inherent value of the trees, encouraging more careful grazing and stopping the local population from chopping the trees down for firewood. All argan sold today is produced by a women’s cooperative that shares the profits among the local women of the Berber tribe. The cooperative has established an ecosystem reforestation project so that the supply of argan oil will not run out and the income that is currently supporting the women will not disappear. The money is providing healthcare and education to the local women, and supporting the entire community as a whole. So not only are you doing your hair a favour by using Argania Oil - you’re also helping to protect a valuable natural resource and enhance the lives of the local villagers. Argania is made in New Zealand and you can feel good that none of Argania’s product range is tested on animals.
