Tips for lush lashes

Long, dark eyelashes are coveted by many women, and with mascara often referred to as a "desert island product", it is clear this is an area we love defining and playing up.
Lash health is important. Always remove every last trace of your mascara with a gentle eye make-up remover to avoid lash breakage and eye irritation.
Oily products work beautifully to dissolve eye make-up fast, and eliminate the need to rub the eye excessively. The options for enhancing lashes below can be used alone, or in combination.
Mascara
Get the most out of your mascara by wiggling the brush through your lashes in a zigzag motion from the base of your eyelashes; add extra coats while lashes are still wet.
There are many different formulas available; some of the best brands are L’Oreal, Maybelline and Lancôme (try Lancôme Hypnose for incredible volume and length).
New mascaras can often be very wet and have excess product on the brush. Simply wipe excess on a tissue, or on the edge of the tube to avoid clumpy lashes. Always apply mascara to your lower lashes first to avoid upper lashes leaving dots on your eye shadow.
Mascara needs to be replaced every three months, and discarded if you get an eye infection. Avoiding pumping the wand in and out of the tube will prolong the life of your mascara, and will help prevent air getting in which will dry product out. If mascara isn’t your thing, consider getting your eyelashes tinted at a beauty salon.

False Lashes
Glue-on false lashes are the quickest way to add glamour to your look, and enhance the eyes.
Application can take some time to master, so consider a lesson from a make-up artist or a session at a MAC store; they have an incredible selection.
When applying glue to your false lash strip, go easy and just apply a very thin line to the base. Let the glue dry slightly before applying. An easy way to apply your lashes is to look in the mirror with your eyes open; lower the lash down onto your lash line where you would like it to sit, then close your eyes and press the false lash in place with tweezers and fingertips.
Holding the lash in place while the glue sets is a good idea to ensure it adheres properly. Remove by pulling the lash strip from the end very gently. Carefully pick off any glue from your false lashes, and store them for future use. Some pairs will last many wears if cared for correctly.
Eyelash Extensions
Eyelash extensions have become wildly popular in the last few years, and are fantastic to give length and volume without the fuss of glue-on lashes. Results can last from two to four weeks, and require regular top-ups to keep them looking full.
Mascara wear is not really recommended with lash extensions, but if you do choose to use mascara then opt for a water based product that can be removed easily. Daily brushing with a clean mascara wand will keep them in place.

Synthetic individual lashes are glued to single eyelash hairs in a variety of lengths to give a natural look, although more can be added for a dramatic result.
Expect the extensions to fall out with your natural lash cycle. Extensions can be problematic if done incorrectly or worn for long periods of time; so always go somewhere reputable, and consider a lash growth product to keep your natural eyelashes strong.
Lash Growth serums
Products like RapidLash, Latisse and LiLash have been a breakthrough in lash enhancement.
Applied daily to the lash line, these liquids stimulate eye lash growth and can give beautiful results if used consistently. Expect lengthening and darkening of lashes.
LiLash and RapidLash can be bought from pharmacies and beauty salons, but Latisse is a prescription only version available from selected clinics like The Face Place.
These products are particularly good for eyelash extension wearers (during and after), and for those who have lost eyelashes and eyebrows due to chemotherapy.
