Glitter - The Rules

We all love a little glitter, but when it comes to makeup be sure to follow these simple rules. Remember, the look is disco chic rather than drag queen!

1. Stick to glitter the makeup, not the craft tool. While we all love hitting up Spotlight for some crafty goodness, be sure to keep that glitter purely for arty things. Why? It’s made of a different kind of plastic that’s far less forgiving on your skin, and can even cut your eyes. Also, you want really fine glitter particles rather than the big ones you get at craft stores; it makes it more glamorous, less tacky.

2. If you have oily skin, or oily spots, keep the glitter away. As you can imagine, glitter has a remarkable ability to reflect light, meaning it makes you more dewy and glowy. If you have oily skin, however, this isn’t really something you need to enhance, so stick to matte based products on your face and add a pop of colour on your eyes or lips instead.

3. Don’t go overboard. My general rule of thumb for glitter is to only wear it on one area at a time. If you’re worried about going too nuts, use a baked eye shadow rather than loose dust as it is easier to maneuver and a little more subtle. Otherwise, for an even softer take on your eyes, use a glitter eye liner rather than shadow.

4. Prep your base first. Just like applying primer underneath a foundation helps it stick and stay-put, a coat of cream eye shadow in a nude shade will help the glitter adhere to your lids. If you’re wearing a super fine shimmer on your cheeks, apply a subtle creme blush underneath, and if it’s on your lips, a balm will do the trick. The second you’ve popped on your base, apply your glitter with a small sponge tool while the base is still wet, that way, you have more control and the products will stick together.
