Whether you've seen his work on the runway or in magazines, Redken’s Global Styling Director Guido Palau has made himself the authority on fashionable hair.

Recently, he was named one of fashion's top 25 most influential people by the British Fashion Council and has become a prominent fixture in the backstage hustle of New York Fashion Week – styling at some of the week’s most prestigious shows.

Guido shares with Beauty Bible the inspiration behind each look, and how you can create it at home.

Rag & Bone

The texturised downtown hair styling reflects the brand’s chosen seasonal theme of ‘India meets England’.

Inspired by the dishevelled look that comes with travelling – and the rich fabrics and prints from within the show – Guido created a look that is light and undone.

“In my mind the hair today is a little ‘Patti Smith goes to India’. It’s a little rock ’n’ roll, with soft almost dreadlock-like chunky pieces - it’s really a very cool look, and perfect for the Rag & Bone girl” said Guido.

Create the Look:
Saturate damp hair with a very generous amount of full effect 04 all-over nourishing mousse.

Let hair air dry to enhance the natural texture.

Create a messy ‘70s-style centre part.

Apply rough paste 12 working material to the lengths of the hair and twist into long sections to create separation and a piece-y, chunky look.

Tuck hair behind the ear and let sit for a few minutes to create a 70's-inspired bend.

Finish by roughing up hair at the crown for additional texture.

Marc Jacobs
altFor the Marc Jacobs show Guido embraces the challenging task of creating a style to work under Jacob’s Dr Seuss-like hats.

Guido settles on two braided buns which hold in place even when the models are removing their hats between looks.

“Fashion shows are almost always a bit like a dream, and at Marc Jacobs today we're certainly creating a character. She's a little Tim Burton-esque, innocently dark.  Since all the models are wearing these amazing, huge hats, so we need a style that fits the character and complements the hats.  We also create a ‘veil’ of hair lightly covering the front of the models’ face, so it moves with them as they walk down the runway.”

Create the Look:
On clean hair, pull out the first thin layer of hair from the forehead and pull over the face so it creates a veil.

Create a clean centre part from the forehead to the nape of the neck.

Pull the hair into low side ponytails (under the ear) and secure with elastic.

Braid each pigtail and wrap around into a knot, secure with pins.

Finish with forceful 23 super-strength finishing spray to secure the knots.

Victoria Beckham
altThe ultimate in chic, Victoria Beckham’s Fall/Winter 2012 show at the New York Public Library features models styles cut to a blunt, uniform finish that creates an ultra-modern polished look.

“This is a simple style that in fact becomes very glamorous when worn with Victoria’s sexy clothes, working to both highlight the collection and even ‘tone down’ the look a bit. We work to get each girls’ hair flawlessly smooth and straight - you can make hair this straightforward stylish if you do it perfectly. The hair in New York always reflects what I like to call American minimalism - the styles, like this one, aren’t often complicated, but they reflect a simple beauty that I think works wonderfully here.”

Create the Look:
Starting with hair trimmed very straight with a blunt finish, add satinwear 02 ultimate blow-dry lotion to protect and soften hair, and blow-dry.

Create a deep side part and flat iron hair until perfectly straight.

Add a generous amount of shine flash 02 glistening mist for a glossy finish, and tuck hair behind the ears.

Use a dollop of rough paste 12 working material to slick down the front of the style for an extra wet finish and added texture.

Diesel

An update on the classic pony tail is created for the Diesal Black Gold Fall/ Winter 2012.

The look is all about natural texture with strong lines with a slightly undone grunge twist.

“This style is very tomboyish and I want it to appear to be anything but perfect. The girl I had in mind when I created it had certainly done it herself, and is in to rock ‘n’ roll - I thought of how Kate Moss might style her hair when she wears jeans. The height at the crown is what really adds a nice dimension, giving it a ‘60s feel.”

Create the Look:
Saturate damp hair with full effect 04 all-over nourishing mousse while hair is still wet, pull a half inch section from the left side and arrange into a 2-inch sideburn on the cheek.

Guido recommends letting the hair air dry for the optimal natural texture for this style, although he and his team had to use blow dryers (a rough dry) while backstage.

While air drying or blow-drying, use fingers and repeatedly pull hair up at the crown to give the style height.

Create a deep but natural left part, using fingers instead of a comb.

Pull hair into a low pony at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic, and then loosen hair at the crown for height.

Finish with a generous amount of forceful 23 super-strength finishing spray for added hold and texture.

Marc by Marc Jacobs

Guido settles on a refined school-girl pony tail for the Marc by Marc Jacobs show.

Some of the models are styled to wear military-style hats – with which the pony tail works beautifully.

“The clothes at the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection today have a lot of volume, so we want to create a small head to complement the clothing. The hair itself is a nod to minimalism, very clean, fresh and young.”

Create the Look:
Apply satinwear 02 ultimate blow-dry lotion to damp hair and blow-dry straight.

Create a deep left side part and with your fingers, pull the hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck.

Tuck hair behind the ears.

Apply outshine 01 anti-frizz polishing milk to the ponytail for lasting smoothness and a sleek finished look.
