Brushes and tools are absolutely essential for completing a flawless make-up look. If cared for correctly, high-quality brushes should last you many years.

I’ve had some of my brushes for nearly ten years and they’re still going strong.

With such a huge selection of brushes available, in my next series of articles I will go over the basics I believe every woman should invest in.

With five or six brushes in your kit you can complete nearly any make-up look. Some brushes don’t need to be expensive, and others are definitely worth splurging on.

The angle brush pictured above is a multi-use brush that needs to be high quality; I haven’t seen a cheaper version that has the correct bristles and firmness.

Your angle brush shouldn’t be too floppy. Rather it should be firm with minimal give, and the bristles shouldn’t be too fluffy.

What can you do with an angle brush?
Define eye brows, line the eyes in a variety of ways and apply lip colour.

How do you use it?

Brows – Pick up a small amount of matte shadow or brow powder on the brush to fill in and define the eye brows.  Try and opt for a slightly lighter shade than your hair, and never use black on the eyebrows. Light, short feathery strokes will keep it looking natural.

The angle brush allows you to create a lovely clean line along the bottom of the brows; to make your brows stand out even more, highlight directly underneath them with a white or cream shadow or pencil (blend well).

Eyes – Use a gel liner for an intense line, or use the brush damp with a dark eye shadow for a softer look. Pressing the brush into the lash line gently in small sections is an easy way to get a neat line. Angle brushes are great for applying eye shadow and liner to the lower lash line too.

Lips – Use to create a very sharp, bold line for bright colours. You can also use an angle brush dipped in a tiny amount of concealer to correct mistakes around the lip line.
