It doesn’t matter if you’re off on a beach getaway or simply enjoying the sun in your own backyard – high humidity and the intensity of our sun (not to mention a very large hole in the ozone layer) can leave your skin and hair looking a little worse for wear. But with our summer anti-ageing beauty tips you will not only look good but feel good all summer long…
1.After spending a day at the beach you need to use a good moisturiser. Try using products that contain retinol as it helps reverse the effects of sun damage. We recommend: Neutrogena Healthy Skin, RRP: $29.95 or Environ Hydrating Oil Capsules RRP: $115.50.
2.Keep a hydrating spray c
lose by so you can freshen up your skin and makeup when the heat starts to get too much. Try, Avene Thermal Water, RRP: $26 , or Dermalogica AGE Smart Antioxidant Hydrating Mist, RRP: $69.30
3.Humidity and salt water sap the moisture out of your hair and leave it frizzier than Worzel Gummidge. To combat this, invest in an ultra moisturising shampoo that is full of proteins to help your hair look healthy and glossy, bump up your leave in conditioning treatments and use regular sun protection on your hair when outside.
We love: Sebastian Hydre Shampoo and Conditioner, RRP: $36 and Kerastase Soleil Micro-Voile Protecteur, RRP: $38
4.Your hands are one part of the body that often gets neglected when it comes to sun care and moisturising. Keep them looking young by using a super nourishing hand cream each night Try: Aveeno Intense Relief Hand Cream, RRP $13.50 and regular top ups of a sun protecting hand cream during the day. We like Avalon Organics Moisture Plus Lotion with SPF18, RRP: $29.95.
5.Keep dull flaking skin at bay by exfoliating regularly. It’s a good idea to freshen skin in the shower with a scrub – you can use a body wash and a bath sponge, or for an extra anti-cellulite boost, try using a dry body brush before you shower – this helps to boost circulation. If your skin is dry and needs nourishing while you scrub, The Body Shop’s Spa Wisdom Morocco Black Olive & Argan Oil Scrub is sheer bliss.
6.Fake tan is a must for summer as it work wonders at masking cellulite, veins and age spots. Remember, a real tan is absolutely, no question about it, going to age the hell out of your skin, whereas a fake tan emits a youthful glow – minus any crinkly damage. Dr Sarah Hart of The Palm Clinic says that “The sun will always damage. You might think a tan looks good when you are young, but when you hit 35 all that damage you did in your youth shows up on your face as pigmentation and wrinkles. Stay out of the sun.” We’re not even going to get started on melanoma, suffice it to say, it’s no joke. People are dying of skin cancer and it’s a no-brainer really. It is not worth dying for a tan. We love: Nivea Summer Beauty Firming Gradual Tan Body Lotion for a healthy, even glow and nourished skin at the same time. Moisturise with it every second day to build colour. (Remember you DO NOT want to look like Donatella Versace - left)
7.Use bronzer on the areas of your face that catch the sun, nose, cheekbones, and forehead. A good tan should highlight and contour your face so avoid the one shade all over look. Make sure that with bronzer you just use a light touch – too much is not a good look. We love, M.A.C Style Warrior Bronzer, RRP: $42.
8.I know you have heard it many times before but wear sunscreen! Tanning causes DNA damage and therefore puts the pedal to the metal on your skin ageing and puts you at real risk of deadly skin cancer. Slather plenty of it on and top it up often. We love, Invisible Zinc SPF30+ (from $19.99) which provides the ultra sun protection power of zinc without looking like a 1980s cricketer – yep, it’s invisible on the skin. Amazing.
9.During summer try using a tinted moisturiser rather than a heavy foundation. It will still provide enough coverage while also giving you that dewy look we love during the hotter months. Olay Touch of Foundation which has an SPF15+, a hint of colour and a moisturiser in one for girls on the go.
10.Be sure to use waterproof mascara otherwise you will end up with panda eyes after all that swimming. Only apply mascara to your top lashes as mascara on the lower lashes can make your face appear drawn. L’Oreal Telescopic (waterproof) provides a long lash look with a clean, defined finish that is perfect for summer days.
