For most, spritizing ourselves with our favourite perfume is part of our daily routine. We often wear different scents to compliment different outfits, time of day, season or even mood.

So here is our guide to everything you should know about perfume…

• The Human nose is very sensitive and the more you bombard it with different smells, the more difficult it becomes to differentiate between the scents. Test no more than 3 and use the testing strips provided. Have a walk around and once you have decided on your favourite of the 3 test it on your wrist. Due to the way they are manufactured they will alter over time, this is dependent on the top, middle and base notes. Your first sniff will reveal the top notes but after about ten minutes the middle notes will appear and after around twenty or thirty minutes the base notes will come through. It’s important that you like this last stage as that is what you will smell for most of the day after applying in the morning.

• In most brands and scents you will find there are 3 different categories of the scent strength and this will alter the cost of the perfume. Pure Perfume typically contains 15-40 % essential oils and has the strongest concentration; only a small amount is needed. Eau de Parfum is second strength and contains 10-20% essential oils. And lastly eau de toilette would typically contain 5-15% oils and as a result is the most affordable version of a scent.

• There are also 5 different categories for the type of scent and ingredients used

Floral – extracted from flowers, great if you want something delicate
Fruity – Extracts from the juice of mainly citrus fruits. A great uplifting fragrance
Green – this is fresh and crisp like cut grass and great for the summer months
Chyper – This features a wooden aroma and is known to be calming
Oriental – Produced from spices and ideal if you’re in the mood to feel sexy

• Apply perfume lightly to the body's pulse points - wrists, base of the throat, behind the ear lobes, the bend in your elbows, and between the breasts. Do not rub your wrists together after applying fragrances as this breaks down the scent. And it’s always best to apply perfume before you dress or put jewellery on as it can stain or damage metals.
