There has been many a time in my life where I have gone to a hairdresser for advice on my style and felt as though they were talking back to me in another language and it turns out that they were, they language of hair! Below are some translations for to help you understand the trendy salon lingo.

Soft Layers
These layers are for a more subtle look to take weight out of heavy hair  they layers that blend smoothly in with the additional lengths of the hair, creating a smooth transition from one length of hair to the next.

Choppy Layers
Add drama and volume to any hair texture. Used to create a funkier look.

Graduated Bob
Hair around the face is the longest part of the style but to simplify it more, just think Posh Spice and her hair cut more commonly known as ‘The Pob’.

Bangs
Also referred to as a fringe. Ask your stylist what type would best compliment your face shape and hair cut.

Scattered Highlights
This is when the foils are placed in the hair in more random sections as opposed to evenly placed around the hair. This is good for if you do not have time to have your maintain re growth as it will not grow back so obviously.

Lowlights
Painting section of hair a darker shade for a richer looking colour.

Dusting
A tiny trim used purely to maintain the ends, you would ask for this if you are trying to grow your hair.

Over direct
A technique to lift roots; the stylist pulls up a section of the hair opposite is natural fall before blow drying.

Back-combing
This gives you big hair and helps the volume last, hair is pulled taut and pushed down towards the roots with a comb or bristle brush. Great for a night out!

Rough Dry
To blow dry only using hands for texture.

Balayage
To highlight pieces freestyle-minus the foils, for a sun kissed look with the ends being the brightest part.

Double Process
Two colour treatments in one trip to the salon. For example bleaching and adding colour on top.
