The detox diaries - getting your glow back

We sent beauty assistant Gracie Stewart on a seven day detox so we could check out her results before we embarked ourselves - read her diary here...

For the last few months I have been consuming enough food and alcohol to feed a small country and now it’s starting to take its toll on my body. I’m constantly bloated after eating and my skin is dull and breaking out – things definitely had to change so I picked up a seven-day detox kit from the chemist. The good thing about the one I picked is it still allows you to eat but places importance on going back to the basics to get the best results. This means I am cutting out dairy, alcohol, sugar and anything processed!

Day 1:
Only today did I realise I would be digesting a total of 21 capsules a day for the next 7 days, 7 before breakfast, 7 at lunch and other 7 before dinner - I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Other than needing to pee at least once every hour after all the water I have been drinking I haven’t noticed or felt any changes. As they say good things take time I guess.

Day 2:
The thought of eating breakfast this morning was enough to make my stomach squirm and no I’m not pregnant. Not feeling like food, especially breakfast which is probably my favourite meal is very out of the ordinary for me, I’m not usually one to let any food slip by. Throughout the day I was plagued by an annoying but not unbearable headache which apparently can be one of the effects of detoxing.

Day 3:
Once again I really don’t feel like eating so for the entire day I only munch on a few almond and grapes, probably why I have now lost 1 kg in two days. I also felt really dehydrated today so I have been drinking enough water to keep any sea creature happy and even though I slept right the night I woke up feeling more tired than when I went to bed.

Day 4:

Still absolutely shattered and have lost half a kilo. My appetite however seems to have returned but rather than two slices of vogals for breakfast I’m full after one and when lunch finally rolls around I’m not needing my usual sugar hit instead I find myself wanting strawberries and grapes. Still have those pesky headaches though!

Day 5:
To my surprise I wake up feeling extremely good - no headaches and full of energy. I have lost another half a kilo and am still peeing constantly - all this water must really be flushing any toxins out. For breakfast I have an apple and find myself craving fruit and vegetables like I have never done so before. I don’t even feel the need for a glass of wine to accompany my grilled chicken salad which is something I would have always wanted. However towards the end of the night my energy levels drop hugely and I feel like I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in weeks which is odd as I’m sleeping so much better now with no tossing and turning!

Day 6:
I have been getting a lot of complements about my skin the last few days, people asking what I use to get that “glow” and also noticing the small amount of weight I have dropped. Putting up with those headaches now seems worth it. I actually must say I did feel really good today - kind of like I had found the perfect balance, I know - it sounds cheesy but its honestly very true. I’m not tired but I don’t have this insane amount of energy one minute and feel like I am going to crash the next – the ups and downs that I previously had are gone. I am also loving the fact that I don’t feel the need for chocolate or other sugary treats - I would much prefer snacking on something like berries.

Day 7:
My final day of the detox and I have lost 2.2kg, I feel great, my skin looks much healthier – no break outs and I’m not getting bloated after I eat. If you’re anything like me and over indulge far too often I definitely recommend giving a detox a go, it’s also a great way to help get your body and mind in shape for the New Year. Now I’m hoping my lack of interest in all things bad will continue but only time will tell, I will have to update you as I go, though I must say I am looking forward to enjoying a glass of bubbles.
