A Beauty Bible reader asks Skincare Expert Caroline Parker of Dermalogica why she has darker patches of skin under her arms and on her inner thighs and what she can do about it… Hi there,
When we look at a skin of a baby when born they don’t seem to have these darker areas but as we grow and experience friction in these areas it can cause irritation that later forms into what we refer to in the industry as ‘hyperpigmentation’. This is more common in darker skins than a Caucasian skin; the reason being because the pigment producing cell (i.e.melanocyte ) is more reactive and therefore more easily shows up darker forms of pigmentation on the skin.
To be honest, I don’t recommend that you try pigment lightening options because the hyperpigmentation is likely to come back again. Lot’s of people with darker skin experience this so don’t feel like it is only you. Try and accept it as part of your unique genetic make up.
