Beauty Bible’s Resident Skin Expert, Dermalogica’s Caroline Parker explains what a reader with greasy young skin and anti-ageing concerns should be doing…
Hello Caroline,
I am 26 and have greasy skin. I really would like a face cream that would combine SPF/anti-ageing/toning but I am not sure what to go for? Do anti-wrinkle/ageing creams really work?

I think it comes down to terminology, the Dermalogica brand promotes ‘healthy ageing, or intelligent ageing’ and definitely not the “hope in a bottle” marketing approach. I don’t believe that it is possible to turn back the clock and completely erase a wrinkle using a topical cream, but I do believe that using good skin care products will make your skin appear smooth, healthy and hydrated – all of which make our skin look more youthful. There is some great technology now to increase skin volume and hydration which also leads to younger looking skin.

However at 26 and with an oilier skin you probably don’t need to invest in too many products for treating ageing – the most important product for you in this category would be a sunscreen. Choose one that will help control the excess oil on your skin – there are products that have micro sponges in which literally soak up oil from the skin surface. Look for a moisturizer and SPF combined as these dual action products are quick and easy to use and are great value for money. Make sure the products you are looking at don’t contain comedogenic ingredients as these can cause blackheads and bumps under the surface of your skin. Most importantly look for the product that you are going to love to put on your skin every day, so it has to feel good, stop your skin shining, allow for great make up application on top etc. Have a wish list of what you are looking for in your product when you go into the skin centre so it is easier to find what you want. Also look for the places that let you ‘try before you buy’ as it’s helpful to feel a product on your skin before you purchase it.

Further to this there is always the option of layering a specialized serum under your moisturizer and you can even use these just in the areas that you need them e.g. a skin renewal complex used where you have congestion. This allows you to deal with multiple skin concerns.

Good luck!
Caroline
