Adrian Barclay, NZ Hairdresser of the Year 2009 (Hair Expo) shares his thoughts on Spring and Summer hair trends…

What are your favourite colour and style trends for Spring and Summer?
I love the punch the colour pallete adds to this seasons natural tone. Baby blues and soft pinks add gentle drama to these very romantic styles. Hair shapes for this season are a combination of hard and soft textures which gives versatility and interest to each style.

How would you best recommend people achieve that look?
Go for L’Oréal Professionnel Texture Expert Smooth Velours Blow dry milk. This product is the perfect companion for the warmer summer months as it contains a UV filter to protect hair from the harsh rays of the sun, while also protecting hair from heat damage. The best styles are created using the natural movement of your hair to deliver a fresh romantic finish.

Which celebrity hair style do you love – and whose would you love to fix!?
I love Rihanna’s hair, that short boy/girl undercut quiff is very sexy.
I would love to fix the style of Camilla Parker-Bowles.

Do you think that women should have age restrictions as to their length and style?
It really depends on the individual but I don’t think age should be a restriction. However, mid-length layered shapes look feminine and stunning on mature women. Think Jane Fonda and Olivia Newton-John.

On the Hair Style he created for L’Oréal Professionnel Precious Garden, its latest colour collection for spring / summer 2009…

What is the best type of hair to create finger waves with?
Finer hair works best, but medium hair textures with natural wave can also be an advantage.

What is your favourite method to create them?
I start by applying a good styling product for the hair type from roots to ends and then pre-dry the hair with a blow dryer and part as desired. I divide the hair into one inch sections and work a curling iron through section by section. Starting from close to the scalp, I spiral hair into the iron's barrel, hold briefly, then release and repeat until complete. It’s important to let the hair cool and then test the curl – if the curl hasn’t taken then I take the curl and put it up to the scalp with a pin, rolling as you go. If the curl is firm, I separate it with my fingers and finger comb the desired look. Then to finish, you can pin the hair back on one side away from the face.

What is the best way to make sure they last?
Either sleep sitting up in an arm chair for the evening or invest in a good silk pillow case.

How can we give them a modern twist? (For example, using colour...)
Sectioned areas of the head can be finger-waved to create drama especially on short hair which transforms into a stunning evening look. You can also apply a small amount of crimping to sections around the face to add more texture for any occasion.

How was the colour created for this style in the Precious Garden collection?
The colour was inspired by very soft petals of flowers. The shape is very round with soft edges and allows the colour to move with any hair style. This placement of colour is very sophisticated but with a twist of contrast that will suit any woman. The softness of Precious Garden allows any woman to change her colour pallet and try something new for spring.
