School ball season is nearly upon us! And what’s a girl to do to make sure she shines on the night of the ball? Beauty Bible is coming to the rescue with our ultimate ball beauty prep guide.

Skin
Face: Start with a perfect base.  Get into a good skincare routine well in advance.  Ensure you are cleansing, toning and moisturising morning and night, and of course, eating well, drinking lots of water and getting lots of sleep.

For teenage skin, gel cleansers are usually better than creamy cleansers, as they will lift some of the excess oil off the surface of the skin. Many gel cleansers can also have an anti bacterial agent which will reduce breakout activity without over drying your skin. Cleansing your skin morning and night will really help reduce breakouts.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!  This is an essential skin-prep step, to ensure your skin is a smooth canvas for makeup application, and also to ensure it is glowing rather than looking dull.

Product Love: Try Trilogy Gentle Facial Exfoliant, a dual-action treatment that gently polishes away dead skin cells and surface debris. RRP$39.90.

To clear up problem skin in a flash, we love Clean & Clear Advantage Pimple Control Kit.  This smart kit is a 4-step routine featuring a pimple control cleanser, toner, and moisturiser and fast clearing spot treatment that work together to give you clearer skin.  Clinical studies haves shown that 100% of people saw clearer skin in just one day! RRP $19.99

If you have oily skin, invest in an oil-controlling mattifier.  We love Murad’s Oil Control Mattifier, which is proven to prevent up to 78% of oil build up over eight hours.

Body
While it’s important to take care of your face, don’t neglect your body.  Again, exfoliating once or twice a week will be your best strategy to get beautiful, glowing skin.

Product love: Weleda Birch Body Scrub, which gently exfoliates and smoothes skin with natural plant wax pearls while pure plant oils gently massage skin supporting cell renewal. RRP $19.90

Follow with a luxurious, hydrating moisturizer.

Product love: Vaseline Cocoa Butter RRP $12.26, which works by hydrating skin while allowing light to be reflected evenly from the surface as well as from deeper layers of the epidermis. This dual reflection gives skin a luminescent glow, enhancing its natural pigmentation and maintaining a radiant appearance.  So skin will be even more gorgeous and glowing!

Garnier Body Intensive 7 Days Lotion is another favourite of ours - it provides intense, long-lasting hydration up to seven days after application.

Tanning
A healthy tan will really make your skin glow – so fake it until you make it!  Tan two days prior to the ball to let it settle in and to prevent it from rubbing off on your dress.  Spray tanning is done by a trained beauty therapist with an airbrushing machine.  This is a great method, as providing you have a very experienced therapist, you get an even, natural look and the therapist can use the tan to contour you to bring out your best features and hide the worst. Do all hair removal the day before, and exfoliate thoroughly before hand. Make sure you don’t have any moisturisers, fragrances or deodorants on your skin when the tan is applied. We love Mobile Spray Tans NZ, because they bring the tanning to you – so you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

DIY:  If you’re going the DIY route, ensure you exfoliate properly and remove all hair the day prior. Check out our guide to DIY fake tanning here

Product love: St Tropez Bronzing Mousse RRP $60.30, a super-lightweight, easy-to-apply, velvety mousse delivers the ultra-even all-over tan you’ve always wanted. Infused with conditioning aloe vera and long-lasting colour, you’ll have a perfectly natural looking, streak free tan that dries in an instant. St Tropez’ innovative fragrance technology helps to take away the tell-tale tanning aroma to make way for a beautiful subtle, yet refreshing fragrance.

Hair
At the hairdresser:  Try to book your appointment well in advance, to ensure you get the time you are after.  Wash your hair first to avoid it looking to oily later on.  Hairdressers can always use products to create a bit of oil needed for styling.  It’s a good idea to do your research first and know exactly what you want before going in to avoid any nasty surprises!  Taking a picture always helps.

Doing it yourself?  Ensure you have all the tools and products you need – if you don’t own them, see if you can borrow them. And practice makes perfect – it’s an absolute necessity to trial the look several times before the big day!
Product Love: Here are a few great tools for creating various hair looks:

Sunsilk Co-Creations Plumped Up Volume Hairspray RRP $6.53: this is Sunsilk’s most advanced plumed up volume formula with Polyfibre Complex for bouncy, full bodied hair, and good hold.

Cloud 9 ‘The Wand’ RRP $350: Cloud 9’s new styler gives you the style scope to create soft finger waves, loose beach curls or tight ringlets. The length of the barrel, combined with the difference in diameter from the base to the tip, allows for more creativity when styling. A ceramic black barrel features patented technology leaving hair with the finish and gloss of a Cloud Nine styling iron, for that just-stepped-out-of-the-salon look.

ghd brushes and stylers: ghd, the ultimate stylers, are always an essential for creating great hair looks. Plus, ghd has now introduced a range of professional brushes so you can really get the salon finish at home.  The new brushes range has been designed and hand finished exclusively for ghd. Each brush features a signature platinum toned end cap with a soft touch, non-slip finish for better hair styling control. Brushes RRP $14-39.

Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly RRP $6-$7 – want sexy, messy bedroom hair rather than a ‘done’ do?  The TMS range will help you achieve this. The new range, infused with wild violet & pomegranate, features a shampoo, conditioner and the first styling products for the Herbal Essences brand including a mousse, spray gel and hairspray.  The touch-hold softening and holding ingredients in the styling products deposit at certain points on the hair to help create a soft hold for wavy, touchable hair.

Need volume? Try the Wella High Hair ‘add some body’ for a volume boost before creating an updo or whipping hair into a low pony.

Makeup
Don’t be afraid to do your own makeup – sometimes it can be the best option. After all, you know what you like and what looks best on you and you’re confident in the art of makeup application, then why not?    As always, practice in advance, and ensure you have all the tools you need. Top tip: if you don’t have one already, invest in a good primer. This will ensure your makeup stays on all night.

If you decide to get your makeup done professionally, again it’s good to book well in advance.  This can be a good option if you’re not as confident with makeup – while you do pay for it, most places let you redeem the value back in product so you have it at the ready for touch ups throughout the night.
