Red Hot Red Heads

Hug a Ginga Day may have officially come and gone but that doesn’t mean we need to stop sharing the love for our red headed friends.

From Gilligan's Ginger to Deaperate Housewive’s Bree Van De Kamp and Disney’s Jessica Rabbit, the list of inspiring redheads just keeps getting longer.

It also seems in the past few months, there has been an increase of redheads popping up in Hollywood. Maybe all the brunettes are lightening up for their summer or maybe there's something appealing about standing out in the sea of blonde, but I think this is a hair trend that's catching on like wild fire.

I asked a local go-to hue aficionado to shed some light on how to keep your scarlet locks looking good if you should opt to go red and, trend alert! — You defo should!

Where and how to go red right: Mana Dave of Balze Salon in New Market, Auckland, is the expert at turning you red with finesse. Here, he gives us the low-down on how to go red the right way:

Like any haircolour, you can generally wear any shade that you like, depending on the commitment you can make to the maintenance of the colour and whether or not you want to be adjusting your makeup to suit your new haircolour. So keep in mind that the further away from being a natural redhead that you are, the greater the amount of maintenance that will be required by you. The decision to become a redhead, shouldn’t be taken lightly. Artificial red tones are the most difficult to keep in the hair, so if you decide to make the plunge, the following tips will keep your red ‘red’.

Colour your hair at least every 4-6 weeks to maintain the vibrancy of the shade.

Use a dedicated colour protection range like Redken’s Colour Extend that is designed to minimise colour fade when washing your hair.

Regular at home conditioning treatments will also make a big difference as to the longevity of your red haircolour, so try Pureology Essential Repair masque to boost up your protein levels and help maintain the power of your colour.

Also use styling products that have UV filters to ensure that your colour is protected against the sun and natural elements.

Your natural skin tone is going to be the biggest factor when deciding what shade of red to wear. Fair complexions with blue or green eyes should look at warmer lighter reds such as coppers and strawberry tones, while creamy coloured complexions with dark eyes should wear deeper reds like auburns and mahogany.

If you’re hesitant about going ‘fully red’, then introduce reddish pieces into your natural colour to give you a taste of red. Your colourist will be able to select the right shade to suit your natural base colour and create some dramatic impact. This is a particularly great option for brunettes who need to warm to the idea of having a more vibrant appearance in their colour than they are familiar with – redheads are a rarity and always get noticed.

For blondes considering a change to red, a semi permanent option such as Redken’s Shades EQ range is an excellent way for you to sample a red tone and add mega amounts of shine at the same time. Maintenance won’t be an issue as the colour will fade gradually with washing and won’t create an unsightly regrowth.

A great red colour is like a great red wine – it takes time. Red’s will have maximum wow factor if you allow them to process for their full timeframe. Cutting short on your processing time can minimise the holding power of your red because you have reduced the amount of time that the colour has been allowed for depositing the red tones into your hair so don’t rush it.
