Seriously, what’s not to love about dressing up for the races? Gorgeous frocks, amazing hats, heels, handbags – and perfect hair and makeup. There are not many events that can excuse this amount of girlish glamour and photo ops – and we love it.
So how do you top off the perfect outfit with the perfect grooming?
1) Allow yourself plenty of time to groom your nails – short and square’ish and paint them in a colour that co-ordinates with your outfit.
2) Make sure you are hair free in places that will be exposed to public view. Wax two days before or shave the night before for the best finish.
3) If you want to look tanned, go for a professional spray tan – it’s just so much less risk than anything you can do yourself and will give you a much better and more natural colour. If you don’t want to look tanned, you might like to spend a couple of nights prior to the races event, using a moisturising slow tan which will ensure your skin is more even toned and ready for the bright lights of day.
4) Now for the makeup. Despite all the heels, handbags and serious frocks, the races call for daylight makeup – so make sure you have good natural lighting for the application and hold off on the vamp and shimmer. Ensure that you do all your skin prep – cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise, but to top it off you will need to apply a sunscreen to make sure you don’t turn
into a lobster. Even the widest brim of a race day hat will not completely protect your face from sun damage.
5) Now covergirl, put the base on your face – use one with an SPF if you can – gives you that little extra sun protection kick and if you are using a liquid number, we always suggest that you warm it in the palm of your hand before applying it, starting from the centre of the face (the nose usually requires the most coverage) and working outwards to blend, blend, blend. If you are not so big on finger painting, polish the foundation on with a foundation brush.
6) Apply concealer to any redness or pimples Apply under the eye after you have finished your eye makeup so you can clean up any eyeshadow fallout.
7) Apply your eyeshadow. A smokey eye is good and if applied well should last you the course of the day without too much drama. Bobbi Brown Long Lasting Cream Eyeshadow is the perfect amount of luxe glamour and you won’t have to worry about it coming off. When it comes to eyeliner, choose one that sets as it dries so it will stay put.
8) Keep the lips light and simple. Sipping champagne out of miniature bottles through a straw all day long makes lip paint very high maintenance, so choose something that looks fairly natural and does not require constant checkups.
Keep aside a few essentials to take with you on the day – powder, concealer, lipstick, fragrance atomizer and you are ready to be gorgeous!
