I’ve long heard about the benefits of microdermabrasion as a non-invasive way to reveal, smoother, glowing and younger looking skin.
I was recommended a course of microdermabrasion to deal with skin issues such as rough skin texture (caused by build up of skin cells), and generally dull, tired looking skin. Often microdermabrasion is used to combat skin ageing - at 25, this isn’t too much of an issue for me, but starting a routine of regular microdermabrasion now, meaning my skin maintains a youthful appearance, longer.
So...what is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic, mechanical exfoliation treatment designed to remove the uppermost layer of dead skin on the face, neck and décolletage.
It uses a powerful device to spray microcrystals of aluminium dioxide (corundum powder) across the skin’s surface. The aluminium dioxide is a very fine, very hard, sand-like material that blasts away the uppermost layer of dead skin cells on the skin's surface.
It is a painless and relatively quick procedure, hence why it’s sometimes called the ‘lunchtime peel’.
What are the benefits?
Microdermabrasion leaves your skin smooth, glowing and looking more youthful.
It diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, visible pores, and rough skin.
Microdermabrasion makes it easier for your moisturiser/anti-ageing products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen, giving your skin a more youthful appearance.
Are there side effects or cautions?
Microdermabrasion should not be used if you have extremely sensitive skin, or on acne breakouts.
You may experience redness, flaking and temporary scarring after the treatment, however these are temporary.
Your skin will be sensitive to sunlight after the treatment so make sure you apply a sunscreen afterwards.
In some cases (although the risk is minor) microdermabrasion can effect skin pigmentation, i.e. you may get dark or light patches on your skin.
The verdict?
I went to Forme Spa in Ponsonby for my course of microdermabrasion. I was recommended a three week course of once-weekly microdermabrasion and two peels after the first treatment. After this, my therapist promised I would notice a marked difference in the appearance of my skin.
The results? My skin is smoother, softer, pores are reduced and the overall appearance is more refined and youthful. I had quite a few blackheads on my nose that have also disappeared. I didn’t experience any of the cautioned-against side effects, such as redness and visible marks left on my skin.
The only downside I’ve noticed is skin breakouts after each treatment. However, Tracey, my therapist, advised me that breakouts are actually a good thing, as they are a sign that previously sluggish skin is now working as it should be –by bringing dirt and oil to the surface and dispelling it.
And , after finishing my final treatment, these have faded and my skin is clear again. Overall? It’s something I’ll be introducing into my beauty routine going forward, to maintain the smoother, clearer appearance my skin currently has, and to ensure I am getting optimal results from my moisturiser (given I’m currently investing in one that’s not cheap!)
Tip: If you go for a course of treatment, be aware that you can’t wear foundation until the next day. Forme Spa recommends a light dusting of Jane Iredale mineral makeup after the treatment to take away any slight redness and so you don’t have to go barefaced afterwards. The lovely ladies will fix you up with this before you leave.
A course of three sessions of microdermabrasion at Forme Spa costs $264 if you prepay (otherwise it is $105 per treatment. Forme has locations in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington. Visit
