When is a facial not a facial? When it’s a Hema facial and it is so much more… Wellington-based Facialist Margaret Hema has a dedicated clientele of Wellingtonians and received ecstatic reviews from Liv Tyler and Elijah Wood who lapped up the opportunity to have facials by her during the filming of The Lord of The Rings. But it’s not very often that us non-Wellingtonians can nip down for a facial and so, up till now, the famous Hema facial has been a mystery to me. Luckily us Aucklanders can now put our precious skin in the healing hands of Seonaid Lyons.

Hema is a range of hand-blended organic oils that feel like silk as they are applied to the skin and leave your skin doing its best impression of velvet. Indeed it is no accident that I reference the fabrics in the description, as Margaret Hema’s philosophy is that ‘the skin be treated like a beautiful fabric.’ Unusually you won’t find any exfoliants, clay masks, hydroxy acid peels or even water in this facial – and you won’t miss them either.

Seonaid explained that no two Hema facials are alike because each client has different skin needs and so – much like a massage - each facial technique varies. Using a uniquely stimulating yet relaxing combination of facial acupressure, massage and lymphatic drainage techniques she successfully rreleased the tension in my jaw, re-circulated my office-dulled skin into dewy goodness and left me plump, glowing and so darn Zen I was not sure if I was safe to drive!

I fell in love with the facialist-only product – a divine ‘manuka honey soaked in Hema oil mask’ which smelled good enough to eat and while it worked its natural magic on my face, Seonaid worked her magic from my tense shoulders to my type-weary fingertips using the divine avocado oil based Millenium Face and Body oil. As a fan of the deep cleansing and nourishing powers of oil cleansing I think the luxurious Hema cleanser is going to be added to my must-have list… If only I had Seonaid’s healing hands to apply the products at home!
