Rick DiCecca, Global Stylist, Estēe Lauder Worldwide reveals his tips and tricks to making the most of your eyes…

1. What are your favorite tips for creating great eyes?

A. Choose eye shadow colors based on your eye color. For example, if your eyes are brown choose eye shadow shades in the warm range (beige, brown, peach, green) to create a more natural definition. You can pump up the effect by choosing shades with a soft pearl finish or even a touch of metallic to brighten. By choosing shades in the opposite cooler range (plum, mauve, blue and grey) you will create more drama and definition on the eyes.

B. When applying a contouring (crease) shade to eyes apply to the outer half of eye or graduate intensity from outer edge to inner eye area. This creates a softer more natural definition. One of my all time favorite tips for creating great eyes is to apply your eye liner as close as possible to upper lashes and smudge it once you apply.

C. When applying mascara, stroke wand over top of lashes, then up and under. This technique deposits mascara and grooms in a very effective way to create lush beautiful lashes.

2. What is the best way to use a matte shadow? A metallic shadow?

A. The best ways to use a matte shadows: Under brow arch to create a gentle lifting effect.
Over entire eye area to soften an eyelid that has texture to it. Apply into crease for definition that looks natural and effortless.

B. The best way to use a metallic shadow is to create drama! One way of doing that includes applying the metallic shadow to center of eye lid over iris. Apply it to the entire eye lid from lash to crease to create evening drama.

3. Are there any rules when it comes to how much metallic?

I think unless you are going for a real 1980's eye look, it's important to use metallic shades strategically to create definition and drama. Remember to balance your total look, for instance if you are wearing metallic shadows on eyes, choose a softer more matte or semi luminous finish on cheeks and lips.

4. Any tips for those who wear glasses?

A. Smudge a dark shade of liner along upper lashes.

B. Apply either an eye liner along lower lashes or mascara to lower lashes for definition that shows well behind glasses but that's not overdone.

C. Use a highlight on cheekbones and temples to accentuate angles/shape of face.

5. What makes Estēe Lauder's new metallic shadows different from other metallic
shadows?

The biggest difference is the technology of the color pigments and how we are now able to create a product that clings and blends well with minimal dust for a more modern metallic finish.

6. Any advice on the quick ways to update your eye look or make changes from season to season?

The best way to update from season to season and to make the trend work for your own personal runway is to choose one or two new shadow shades and a new eye liner either for the shade or the formula and incorporate them into your look.

For each collection we give you a choice of a warm or cool palette. Choose based on your lifestyle and on your wardrobe colors.

7. What is the best way to identify eye shadow shades that are "right" for you?

Let's start with eye color. If your eye color is warm, i.e. brown or green, for a natural look stick to colors in that range (brown, peach, gold, green) and to make them appear more intense use cool colors (plum, mauve or gray). For cool eye colors like blue or gray eyes, use cool shades for a natural look and warm shades for a more intense look.

Your skin’s undertone plays a role also! Using shades that are the same as your undertone creates less contrast, i.e. warm undertones - warm makeup shades.

When you choose shades that are the opposite of your undertone you create more contrast.

When factoring in clothing colors remember that clothing and makeup colors in all one family may appear more dramatic than the using both shade groups to create harmony!

Remember that your makeup is a reflection of your personality so experiment and play with shades, finishes and textures and most importantly have fun!

8. How would you describe the hot eye look this coming fall season?

I would describe it as sexy, smoky and infinitely wearable with a soft metallic finish
in shades of Amber and Amethyst!
