Recently, shoppers at New World Victoria Park got an unexpected taste of fashion during their grocery run, when Stolen Girlfriends Club showed their SS11/12 collection down the aisles.

But fashion isn't the only thing invading the supermarket aisles. There are many inexpensive and natural products at the supermarket that can do your skin and wallet wonders. Here are a few items to pop into your trolley on your next grocery trip to get your beauty fix from top to toe.

Hair
Supermodel Miranda Kerr swears by applying olive oil as a hair treatment overnight before rinsing. Other popular at-home hair masks include using grape seed oil, coconut oil, mayonnaise and flat beer.

Many beauty gurus keep scented fabric softener sheets in their handbag which works like a hair serum to keep frizz and static under control, especially in humid weather. Because fabric softener sheets arenʼt made for hair, use sparingly or skip this one if you have oily hair.

Try spraying a little body spray (or a spritz of perfume) onto your hairbrush before brushing for yummy scented hair. Only use a little, as the alcohol content in fragrances can dry out your hair; best for oily hair types or use with a hair serum.

Face
Cucumber slices have been tried and tested to reduce puffiness around the eye area. Chamomile tea bags have anti-inflammatory properties and tannins that also reduce swelling. Place tea bags in cold water for 15 seconds (refrigerate if you have time) and over the eyes for 15 minutes. To treat dark under eye circles, use green, black or white tea bags high in antioxidants.

Swap makeup remover wipes for baby wipes and get more bang for your buck. Facial wipes will set you back about 50 cents each, whereas larger baby wipes cost around 6 cents each. Avoid the eye area, as baby wipes are not designed for use around the eyes or to remove waterproof mascaras.

Make your own eye makeup remover by mixing one part vegetable glycerine and three parts water. Glycerin contains grease-cutting properties and is naturally low in toxins, which makes it ideal for sensitive skin. Try vegetable shortening which contains soybean oil as a makeup remover if you have dry skin.

To banish acne, mix apple cider vinegar or baking soda with water and apply to affected areas. Leave for 15 minutes then rinse. An aspirin facial has become all the rage these days to prevent breakouts and excess oil. Aspirin is high in salicylic acid so this facial is not suitable for sensitive skin. Crush 1-2 tablets with a small amount of water to form a paste and spread over the face.

Running short on time? Use redness clearing eye drops to soothe an inflamed pimple.

Body
Get your 5+ a day inside and out. Popular facial ingredients include avocado, olive oil, sour cream and plain yoghurt, which are nourishing for all skin types, especially dry skin. Eggs work best for oily skin while honey is soothing for those with acne and sensitive skin. Try cooked tomatoes high in lycopene to fight free radicals and help skin repair, which also happen to be in season this autumn.

Make your own facial, body and lip exfoliators by combining raw sugar, sea salt or oatmeal with honey or olive oil. Halle Berry claims to use ground coffee beans high in caffeine for cell stimulation to scrub her thighs, which reduces the appearance of cellulite.

Add 2 cups of milk to your bath for smooth and glowing skin. Milk contains proteins, lipids, amino acids and lactic acid to reduce redness and calm irritated skin.

Nails
Use lemon juice to clean and get rid of yellow-tinged nails by cutting a lemon in half and scrubbing each fingertip and nail. Squeeze other half of lemon into a bowl of warm water and soak for 10 minutes.

Other beauty products you can use elsewhere than intended include hair conditioner as a shaving cream (because everyone runs out of shampoo first!) and deodorant spray on the bottom of your feet to avoid smelliness and stickiness.
