We've all heard the rules about 'age appropriate' hair styles... but the truth is the best haircut is the one that works with your hair, your lifestyle and your look. The BB team check out some celebrity hair inspiration on ladies that are working it - whatever their age...

20s: Play With Texture
Now is the perfecting time for experimenting as changing your hair texture can breathe new life into your look. For sexy summer waves blow dry with fingers rather than a brush, then curl random sections and pull them apart so they don't look too perfect, remember your aiming for that beach goddess look.
If you have waves, consider emphasising them with face framing layers and highlights and lowlights woven through the cut can bring out the texture of your hair. Have fun, experiment and remember, hair does grow back - so live a little!

20s-30s: Go Short and Sleek
An angled bob like Katie Holmes is the perfect sophisticated cut for career woman in her 20s or 30s. However unless you have dead straight, super healthy hair, this short, polished look can take longer to style than long hair - you can't just throw it into a lazy bun like your long haired friends!

30s: It’s all about the Fringe
A fringe is great for accentuating bone structure and makes your look more grown-up and refined. If you have a round face try a side fringe as it will help elongate your face. It can also hide forehead or frown lines and make you look younger. Be warned: after a good night's sleep most fringes will usually stand up on end so try sleeping with silk pillowcases or have a straightener on hand in the mornings for quick tidy ups. Fringes also tend to get greasy quickly due to moisturisers and sunscreens - invest in a dry shampoo to keep your look polished and clean.

40s: Embrace the Crop
Short and slightly disheveled styles are huge this Spring and are perfect for women who don't have tonnes of time to style their hair. Bringing the length up also makes hair seem thicker, so cropped cuts are ideal for fine hair. This is a confidant woman's haircut (clearly Sharon Stone is oozing 'look at moi! in this pic) as there's nothing to hide behind. You can easily va va voom it up with bold accessories and sultry makeup. Get your hair stylist to show you the best products to use and how to tousle the hair 'just so' for the best low maintenance look.

50s: Frame Your Face
Ellen Barkin's bob is flattering for most women and is a great way to keep your hair short without looking ordinary. Be sure to get your hairdresser to thin out the ends for a more modern look while also adding movement. A long side swept fringe keeps the cut face flattering and contemporary.

60s: Do What Suits You
People tend to think the older you get the shorter you should keep your hair but that’s not always the case as Lauren Hutton proves. Don't be afraid to keep your hair long, especially if it's still thick or textured. Keep the colour natural and the tones flattering - in most cases you will want to avoid dark colours which can be ageing and require heavy makeup to balance them. If you can work a blonde, beige and ashy tones look youthful and also keep the greys hidden.

70s & Up: Try a Classic Bob
If your hair is getting thinner, a softly layered face-framing style works best. A bob with bangs is classic, chic, and ideal for thin hair. Barbara Walters is onto a winner here with this elegant style and colour - the pearl blonde lights up her complexion and blends perfectly with any white toned greys.
