DIY Home Hair Colour Guide

Thinking of colouring your hair at home for the first time?  Need a bit of guidance?  Look no further – we have the ultimate DIY home hair colour guide thanks to Garnier. 

 

 

 

 

The perfect shade 
When choosing a shade, determine your natural hair colour and make sure you know the desired colour you want.  A good guideline is to select a shade that’s within two shades lighter or darker than your natural colour. The Garnier Color Intense Permanent Color Cream (RRP$9.99) includes 10 shades from intense black to very light blonde, making it easy to find a shade that best suits you.
 
 
 
Preparation
Make sure you have some old towels on hand as hair colour can stain or bleach material.  Wear old clothes and make sure you have all of the hair colouring equipment necessary such as gloves, instructions, combs, clips and the like before you get to work!  
 
To ensure the best coverage
Part hair into four sections (like a hot cross bun!) from front to back down the centre and from ear to ear. This ensures you get an even application.  Apply colour section by section for the best results.
 
If you are re-applying colour, make sure you ‘touch-up’ your roots with the desired colour first and then massage the remaining colour through the length and ends for a shorter development time. This will help you avoid a colour build up, which can happen if you repeatedly apply permanent colour over existing colour.

I dye my hair at home often, usually blonde, but lately I have started doing the underneath of it bright red, which doesn't take long to fade to the desired pink shade I was after. This has been successful with trial and error, knowing to not mix wet hair of blonde and red as it will run, and the colour stains. I always wrap up the dyed hair to heat up so the cuticles open and absorb more of the colour. For a more brighter colour.

I dye my hair about once every 3 months, I find it really hard to do it evenly myself so usually get a friend to do it for me, but I've started hearing about these foam hair dyes that sound really easy to do - they sound so much more convenient! Hope they work as well
