Coloured eyeliner hasn't got the best reputation. It comes in and out of fashion in various guises, sometimes it works (aubergine – pretty on almost everyone) and sometimes it doesn't (bright orange is for lips, not eyes people.) but mostly, people just stick with the tried and true blacks, browns and occasional greys.

It's always made me feel a bit sorry for navy eyeliners. They've shuffled across my desk regularly since I started beauty writing, while being neither trendy nor a classic, and uncomfortably reminding me of 80's eye makeup, a look no-one should be considering outside of fancy dress parties.

Make-up artists have tried to tell me how flattering it is – with the depth, but not the harshness of black, they've tried to convince me of its versatility too. But I wasn't having a bar of it. Until I left my eyeliner at home when I was getting ready at a makeup-artist friends house, and she insisted I try her new navy one. And then offered me a delicious slice of humble pie.

While I'm never wrong when discussing dishwasher-stacking with my boyfriend, when it comes to makeup, I'm always happy to revise my opinion. I adored how it looked. And the very next day I went out and purchased my own. (I bought Maybelline Black-Sapphire and love it, but M.A.C and Elizabeth Arden also do great versions.)

The key is to get a version that's navy-black. You get the depth of colour without the hard contrast that black gives fairer skins. It's particularly great for lining inside the bottom lid – it becomes a diffused, almost muted black, and picks up the colour in your eyes, no matter what tone they are.

So, yes. Everyone else was right. It is incredibly flattering. It does provides a great dark colour, and doesn't look at all 80's. It even makes smokey eyes so much easier, because it has some pigment to smudge everywhere. Please do me a favour and give it a try. Otherwise you'll be putting up with  Village People referencing titles for a very. long. time.

I've been using MAC navy eyeliner for ages and I love it - fantastic under the eye or on top with a silver or gold eyeshadow smudged in
